What is an Intercooler?
The purpose of using an intercooler is to improve engine performance. As the temperature decreases, air increases its density and therefore its mass volume. Cooler and denser air improves engine performance. Just a ten degree Celsius difference increases air density by approximately 3-5%, which translates into a similar increase in engine power. Intercoolers commonly used in vehicles reduce the charge air temperature by up to 40%.
What are the symptoms of a damaged air cooler in a Mercedes Actros vehicle?
- Loss of Engine Power: A damaged intercooler can lead to less cool air being supplied to the engine, which affects its performance and may result in a loss of power.
- Increased Fuel Consumption: The inability to cool the air effectively can affect combustion efficiency, which can in turn increase fuel consumption.
- Dark Smoke from the Exhaust System: A damaged intercooler may result in unstable fuel combustion, which may manifest itself in the form of dark smoke from the exhaust system.
- Engine Failure: In extreme cases, long-term use of a damaged intercooler may lead to more serious engine damage.
